Department of Physics Fosters PhD Community Through Roundtable Dialogue

23 May 2025

On 17 April 2025, the Department of Physics in the School of Mathematics and Physics at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) hosted an activity titled “Postgraduate Connect & Munch: Roundtable Insights”. This dynamic event was designed to strengthen connections within the postgraduate research community. The gathering provided postgraduate students with a platform to share experiences, discuss challenges, and forge meaningful academic collaborations.

Dr Xi Chen, the Departmental Graduate Study Officer, opened the event by highlighting its dual purpose: “This goes beyond networking—it’s about building a supportive ecosystem where researchers can grow together.” Participants introduced themselves during the event, showcasing diverse research areas—from quantum mechanics to materials science—while sharing their academic journeys.

Navigating the PhD Experience: Challenges & Solutions
This event was planned to create a relaxed environment where students can openly discuss their academic journeys and learn from each other. The form of this community-building activity, a Round Table Discussion, was proposed by one of the postgraduate students. The roundtable discussions delved into postgraduate realities through candid conversations about common struggles.

“As a PhD student, it is sometimes hard for me to touch or understand research outside of my area,” said participant Hao Yang, who works at the intersection of experimental and theoretical particle physics. “The Community Building Activity can help in prompting interdisciplinary exchanges and bringing vitality to academic research. I hope there will be more activities within the department and, more importantly, between departments.”

Beyond Research: Building a Connected Community
The networking session fostered connections through shared experiences. These interactions strengthened both professional relationships and personal bonds.

Dr Chen concluded: “Today’s discussions lay the foundation for a more resilient academic network. Let’s maintain this momentum in future collaborations.”

By facilitating structured yet open dialogue, the Department of Physics continues to cultivate a vibrant postgraduate community.
